Sesame Balls [Vegetarian, Dessert]
Ingredients for 4 servings (12 sesame balls):
- 1/3 cup of brown sugar
- 1/2 large banana
- 2 cups of glutinous rice flour
- 1/2 cup of sesame seeds
- 1/4 cup of sweet red bean paste
- Peanut oil (for frying)
This indulgent dim sum treat is sure to satisfy the taste buds. Not the most healthy recipe, but we can live a little, can’t we? Sure can.
Start off by cutting the half banana into 12 small pieces. Bring 1/3 cup of water to a boil and add the brown sugar. Once the sugar is dissolved, add 1/3 cup of cold water to cool it off. Add rice flour to a large mixing bowl and create a well in the center. Pour in the brown sugar water into the well and stir to mix the sugar water and rice flour. The mixture should begin to become dough. Knead the dough for a few minutes and shape into a ball. If the dough is too hard, add more sugar water; if it is too soft, add more flour. Roll the dough ball into a log and divide the log into 12 even pieces. Form each piece into a ball.
Flatten the dough balls into disks and place 1/4 teaspoon of red bean paste and a cut piece of banana in the center of each disk (this is your filling). Gently roll the sides up and pinch the top to close the dough around the filling. Roll to reshape into a ball. Repeat this for all 12 balls. Roll the balls in the sesame seeds to coat.
Heat peanut oil in a pot to 350 °F. Deep fry the sesame balls until the seeds are golden and the balls float to the surface. Once ready and removed, drain oil and dry on paper towels. Once cooled a bit, they are ready to be munched!
